European Adventure Part VI: Day 6

It was our last full day in Denmark! We decided to leave the city behind for a few hours and head northwest of the city to explore the town of Hillerød.

BREAKFAST

Today we didn't take any chances and we got breakfast in the hotel lobby. The buffet was perfect! Soon we were headed to the train station to catch the regional train to go about 40 minutes outside of Copenhagen to Hillerød. The train ride wasn't anything to write home about but the views when we got to the town were stunning.

CINDERELLA CASTLE

The weather was a bit warmer today but there was still a fog. As we rounded the corner in the town square Frederiksborg Castle appeared out of the mist sitting in the middle of a lake like a movie. It was so stunning! We walked along the lake to the Renaissance style castle. Walking under the entrance and through the main courtyard was a little intimidating. Clearly this was meant to impress upon all visitors that they were coming into the presence of a powerful monarchy. The castle itself was updated in 1620 for Christian IV, the king of Denmark and Norway. In 1882 it was restored after a fire in the mid-1800s to the a museum of Danish history. The style was still very ornate, but not nearly as overwhelming as Rosenborg castle from yesterday. After exploring the castle we went to the gardens, but were a little underwhelmed. We took a few photos and then made our way to lunch at the castle restaurant.

BACK IN CPH

We took the train back to Copenhagen and decided to go visit the Round Tower, Rundetaarn in Danish, which was opened in 1642. It's 137 feet high and we took this slanted walkway alllll the way up. It was a little disorienting. The view from the top was a perfect way to close out our last evening in Copenhagen.

UP NEXT: Paris! We'll travel there and get into the city in time for a stroll along the Seine.
