How to Plan: A Virtual Screening Party
I really miss going to the movies. I love the communal aspect of watching a movie with a crowd of people, even when that crowd is a bunch of strangers. The closest that I’m able to get in this current state are screening or watch parties. So, I thought that I’d share my top tips for how to plan your very on watch party.
What are you watching? The first step is to decide what you’re going to watch. It’s a good idea to select something available on a streaming platform, it will make it little easier when you get to the technology side, which we’ll talk about next. If you have a group of friends, and you’re rotating the pick, maybe you choose themes like heist movies, sci-fi movies, or something else. Keep in mind run-time. In this virtual format, it can be a little overwhelming to watch something too long. I would love to screen Avengers: Endgame, but three hours and two minutes is a big ask in this format!
Technology. The tools that I use require a plug in on Chrome, but all free to use. I really like Scener, in particular, because it allows you to chat, have people on video, and works with most streaming services. Disney +, and Amazon Prime both have a tool within their apps, so that’s always an option. For all of these options, everyone must have a subscription to the streaming service, just to note.
Make It Fun. Feel free to skip over this, if you really just want to enjoy the movie, but I like to make things a bit more interactive. For example, I like to plan a round or two of Bingo during the screening where we’re all looking for objects on the screen. I suppose you could also use those clues for a drinking game, or some other kind of fun activity.
Little Extras. This can be as simple or deluxe as you’d like, but I also like to send movie kits in advance with some delicious popcorn, a movie-themed snack or item, or trivia/Bingo kit.
Post Film. I love talking more in depth about what we just watched, whether we all enjoyed the movie, or it was terrible.
